Our mission is to provide the City of Montgomery, state agencies and local agencies with highly trained professional police officers. Our goal is to furnish a disciplined environment conducive to learning and to provide professional instructions to prepare these police officers to meet the public service and public safety needs of their communities. The Alabama Advanced Criminal Justice Academy was established in 1974 pursuant to the passage of the Minimum Standards Act in 1971 by the State of Alabama creating the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.

The Alabama Advanced Criminal Justice Academy holds the following recruit classes at it's facilities yearly:

• Basic Academy Class- 520 Hours APOSTC minimum standard
• Departmental Classes (MPD Only)- 640 Hours
• Lateral / Refresher Classes - 95 Hours APOSTC minimum standard

In addition to the APOSTC recruit classes, the Alabama Advanced Criminal Justice Academy offers numerous continuing education classes for officers to attend throughout the year. APOSTC mandates that all officers must receive at least 16 hours annually of continuing training to remain certified as a Alabama Law Enforcement Officer. View available classes!

Trainees attending the Alabama Advanced Criminal Justice Academy can expect a physically and mentally challenging experience to prepare them for the world of a Law Enforcement. Our trainees will be held to the highest professional standards as this will be essential when enforcing the laws prescribed by city, state, or federal government regulations. Our motto, "the only easy day was yesterday", will help our trainees prepare for the vast everyday challenges they will face in the field of Law Enforcement.

The Alabama Advanced Criminal Justice Academy Curriculum:

• Academics encompasses legal issues, preliminary investigation techniques, radio and communications, report writing, traffic investigation, and traffic enforcement.
• Driving includes the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course, which covers defensive driving, pursuit policy, and vehicle dynamics.
• Firearms Training includes weapon care and safety, marksmanship, tactical manipulation with the sidearm, shotgun, patrol rifle, taser, and chemical agents handling.
• Human Relations includes cultural sensitivity training, sexual harassment issues, media relations, stress management, disability awareness, community relations, tactical communications, hate crimes, missing persons, and domestic violence.
• Law covers search and seizure, evidence, laws of arrest, crimes against persons and property, sex crimes, crimes against children, and other general criminal statutes falling under the Alabama Criminal Code (Title 13),Traffic Code(Title 32) and Federal Laws.
• Physical Training builds strength and endurance through physical conditioning while promoting a positive attitude toward a fitness lifestyle. It also encompasses training in physical arrest techniques, controls, and weaponless defense.
• Tactics covers patrol techniques and procedures, crimes in progress, building searches, vehicle stops, use of deadly force, and shooting policy.
