Police Officer Trainee Salary: $45,093 (during academy training) and $55,168 (after academy graduation) 
Police Officer (Lateral Entry) Annual Salary: $56,823 to $78,656 (salary for Lateral Police Officers based on years of experience) 

General Requirements for Police Officer

An applicant must be 19 years of age to apply. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen with no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving violence or moral turpitude. Applicants must possess a valid Alabama driver's license or be able to obtain one if license is issued by another state. Applicants must possess a diploma from an accredited high school or a GED. Applicants must reside within a one-hour response time to police headquarters upon graduation of the academy. Applicants must be Honorably Discharged from Armed Services. Applicants must meet State of Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission requirements and Montgomery Police Department requirements. Applicants are required to pass the Physical Abilities Test (PAT) which consists of:

  • Scale 6ft fence
  • Drag a 165 lb. dummy 5 yards
  • Crawl through a 2 x 2 window opening
  • Run 1 ½ miles (within 15 minutes and 28 seconds)
  • Push a car 15 feet

BASIC ABILITIES TEST:

In addition to the possession of a valid high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate, the ACT WorkKeys Assessment Basic Abilities Test (BAT) is required of all applicants, except applicants who have been previously APOSTC Certified and who are required to complete the Lateral Refresher training for reinstatement of Certification, or applicants who possess an Associate’s Degree or higher from a College or University accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), or its regional equivalent. A fee of $45.00, payable to the community college administering the ACT WorkKeys Assessment, is required prior to testing. If an applicant fails any segment of the three-segment test, the applicant is allowed to re-take the segment for an additional fee of $15.00 per segment. The ACT WorkKeys Assessment (BAT) is available nationwide. Applicants may contact any community college. 

The Montgomery Police Department has an Accredited Academy. 

Lateral Transfers

Lateral transfer entry-level program for Alabama and out-of-state POSTC-certified officers or a 10-point POSTC certification for military police officers and federal police officers.

Salary Range

$55,168 to $78,656 annually; ($45,093 during academy training). 

As a sworn officer, the Montgomery Police Department offers overtime, and after the completion of one (1) probationary prior, several part time jobs are available to earn additional income, if interested.

Leave Time

  • Vacation: 13 days per year; number of days per year increases with longevity.
  • Sick: 13 days per year.
  • Holidays: 11 holidays annually, or more at the discretion of the Mayor.

Equipment

All uniforms and accessories, including leather, regulation service weapon and bulletproof vest are furnished by the department. After the initial issue officers are allowed to order new uniforms on an as-needed basis.

Duty Assignments

Upon graduation from the Academy, the recruits will be assigned to the Patrol Division to work with a training officer for the duration of the recruit's year-long probationary period. After the officer's initial assignment of two years, the officer may apply for a transfer to any division by written request.

College Incentive Program

MPD employees enrolled in a Criminal Justice or any related course of study. (i.e. Management, Accounting etc.) Montgomery Police Department pays 100% Tuition for Sworn officers if they attend AUM or Troy. If they attend Faulkner they get a 50% discount for Sworn and administrative staff. At Faulkner Children of full-time MPD employees are also eligible for significant educational assistance through Faulkner’s on-ground traditional program at its Montgomery campus.
