Office of the Mayor Proclamation
WHEREAS, the Office of the Mayor and the Montgomery City Council shall establish the Montgomery Military and Veterans Commission to help the Capital City of Montgomery, Alabama preserve and protect military installations, attract new missions to the city’s military installations, and serve Montgomery’s military community; and
WHEREAS, Montgomery’s military community includes Veterans, Active-Duty Military, Reserves, National Guard, Department of Defense Civilians, and connected military families; they are our neighbors, volunteers, coaches, teachers, partners in education, members of our civic clubs, churches, and so much more; and
WHEREAS, Montgomery’s military community contributes significantly to the quality of life and economic well-being of the City of Montgomery; and
WHEREAS, the Montgomery Military and Veterans Commission shall consist of eleven members who live, work or do business in the City of Montgomery and the members, including the chairperson of the commission, shall be appointed by the Mayor and City Council; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Council shall endeavor to appoint at least two members each from the Active Components (Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy), National Guard, Reserves, Veterans Administration, State of Alabama VA, and one Veteran from the community; amongst its appointments, the Council shall endeavor to ensure representation from different eras of military service; and
WHEREAS, all appointments to the commission shall be for a term of three years and the chairperson of the commission shall serve for a term of two years; and
WHEREAS, the commission will provide communication and assistance to Montgomery’s military community in need of City of Montgomery services, to include homeless military Veterans; and
WHEREAS, advice, supervision, and participation will be provided by the commission relative to fundraising activities for construction of Veterans’ memorials and parks owned by the city while also informing the Mayor, City Council, and appropriate city departments of issues regarding the care, maintenance and use of noted memorials and parks; and
WHEREAS, recommendations will be provided to the Mayor and City Council in relation to the adoption, change or repeal of municipal laws, rules, regulations, restrictions or other matters affecting Montgomery’s military community; and
WHEREAS, the commission shall meet quarterly, or more often as circumstances require, and may perform other duties as requested by the Mayor or City Council;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Steven L. Reed, Mayor of the City of Montgomery, Alabama, in conjunction with the Montgomery City Council, do hereby establish the Montgomery Military & Veterans Commission to serve as a liaison between the City of Montgomery and Montgomery’s military community, to open and maintain channels of communication.
