The GIS Division is responsible for the development and maintenance of spatial data layers in a central database used to do analysis and create maps of the City of Montgomery, Montgomery County and Region as needed and requested.  The GIS Division uses GIS technology to make data and maps available to city departments and personnel, and to provide geo-spatial analysis, and mapping services to city departments, private contractors and consultants and the general public.

A GIS is a computer-based system used in creating, storing, querying, analyzing, and mapping spatial data. Spatial data is simply any kind of data that has a known location, or may be data about an object that has a known location. GIS technology combines common database operations such as queries, statistical analysis, and reports with visualization, and geographic analysis. GIS is a powerful tool for governments and businesses to make informed decisions based upon the “big picture” of related data.

The most common GIS data layers used are: Street centerlines, Address point data, County parcel data, Planimetric data including: streams, streets, pavement, bridges, elevation data, and building footprints, Easements, Zoning, U.S. Census Data, Aerial Photography, Annexations, City Limits, County Limits, Council Districts, VotingPrecincts, & Polling Locations, Sanitation/TrashPick-up Routes, Administrative Boundaries for Fire, Police, Inspections, and others, FEMA Flood,  Zones, Historic Districts, Parks and Facilities, Schools, Public Transit/Bus Routes, Stops, and Structures and Aerial Photography.
