Commemorative Plaques

“The Historic Preservation Commission is pleased to offer its updated Commemorative Plaque program. Plaques are available to owners of 50-year-old, or older, buildings that are locally designated as historic, whether individually or as part of an historic district; any individual property listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks & Heritage or any contributing structure in an historic district listed on the Alabama Register; and any National Register of Historic Places-listed building or any contributing building within a National Register Historic District. Completed applications for a commemorative plaque may be emailed to Shaun Rose at srose@montgomeryal.gov, hand delivered to the Land Use office on the 4th floor of 25 Washington Avenue, or mailed to the City of Montgomery Land Use Division, C/o Shaun Rose, P.O. Box 1111, Montgomery, AL 36101-1111.”

new sign

 Some changes to the previous program include:
• A new sign design. The HPC (then the Historic Development Commission) and Landmarks Foundation were both born out of the same movement in the 1960s. As such, both entities shared the same logo of the Court Square Fountain. Issues with our vendor allowed us to take some time to put our own stamp on the sign program;
• The elimination of the “Historic District” sign for altered properties in historic districts. The HPC made the determination that Montgomery has had an active preservation program long enough to only award signs to properties that are good examples of preservation efforts;
• A twice a year committee review process to evaluate applications and award signs. Application deadlines will be March 1 and September 1 each year, and will be awarded at the June and December HPC meetings. The evaluation guidelines are available below. If a property is not granted a sign, the Committee will offer feedback as to the reasons why the petition did not meet the criteria, as well as any steps that might be taken to make a re-evaluation.
• Property owners seeking replacement signs will need to make application and meet the current criteria for a sign to be reissued.

The cost for a historic sign is still $40. Payment will be requested once the sign is approved by the Committee.
