In anticipation of the 50^th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March the City and several community organizations came together in as an interagency planning team to improve the portion of the trail from the City of St. Jude on the corner of Fairview Avenue and Oak Street to the State Capitol. The Department of Development facilitated the planning that began in the summer of 2013. Work continued up to the date of the March in 2015.

The City of Montgomery invested $1.3 million in the physical upgrades to the trail including:

• Street paving and striping
• Repairing and replacing sidewalks, curbs, and gutters
• Planting trees for pedestrian shade to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood and enhance visitor experience
• Replacing street signs with branded historic trail signs to improve the trail’s visibility and clarify the actual route
• Interpretative signs at strategic locations along the route to add to visitor’s experience by providing additional information about specific moments in history that happened at each location.
• Public art including two major sculpture installations, a large mural, patterned sidewalk on Dexter Avenue and temporary murals painted by local middle and high school students.
