South Hull Historic District (proposed)

In November 2023, the City of Montgomery’s Land Use division received a request from the South Hull District Association (see attached letter HERE) to pursue historic designation of the South Hull neighborhood. Because such a designation would result in having certain rules and regulations associated with being a local historic district applied to approximately 380 properties, our office wants to ensure that everyone is appropriately informed and has an opportunity to comment. The rules are outlined in Montgomery City Code, Chapter 15 - Historic Preservation. You may review the Historic Preservation ordinance HERE.  Most importantly, the code indicates that all exterior changes to properties within local Historic Districts are subject to review by the Architectural Review Board (ARB) and require its approval before any work begins. Regular maintenance and in-kind repairs do not require the ARB’s design review; also, Land Use staff have several expedited review procedures that cover common items like privacy fences and driveway alterations.

As part of the designation process, a public hearing—the time and date of which will be sent in writing to all neighborhood property owners and residents—will be held at a regularly scheduled Historic Preservation Commission meeting.  We are also conducting additional outreach via certified letters to all owners and residents and will hold two public informational meetings at City Hall (103 N. Perry St.) in Montgomery: one on April 26, 2024, at 2-3pm (CST) (to view meeting click HERE) and one on May 8, 2024, at 5:30-6:30pm (CST).(to view meeting click HERE) We would like to hear your opinion on the neighborhood’s proposed historic designation.

If you have any questions or are unable to attend either public meeting but would still like to comment, you may contact Shaun Rose, Historic Preservation Coordinator, at (334) 625-2041, or by email at srose@montgomeryal.gov. You may also mail comments to the Land Use Division, C/o Shaun Rose, P.O. Box 1111, Montgomery, AL 36101-1111.
