In honor of the foot soldiers' arrival at the State Capitol from Selma, Alabama, Mayor Steven Reed and the City of Montgomery's Cultural Affairs Department present "This Side of the Bridge."
Thousands of peaceful demonstrators, led by Dr. Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., gathered at the steps of the capitol building in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 25, 1965. Following a five-day march from Selma, the group arrived from Selma. The demonstrators made the 54-mile journey to bring attention to the issue of Black voting rights. Despite the Civil Rights Act of 1964 being passed by Congress, Black citizens in Alabama and other southern states continued to be denied access to equal rights despite it being enacted by Congress.
