On Saturday, the Regency Park Community Center will be full of food, music and messages about stopping violence in Montgomery.
Hosted by Montgomery Mayor Seven L. Reed and the City Council from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., it'll be the launch of the city's new Stop the Violence campaign.
A Stop the Violence Rally will be held Saturday at the Regency Park Community Center in Montgomery.
In a release, Reed described domestic abuse and gun violence as being chief concerns for the city.
As of Wednesday, at least 23 of Montgomery's 28 homicides for 2021 were from gun violence. Montgomery police had 68 homicides in 2020, plus six extra death investigations, making it the deadliest year for the city in decades. 379 people were shot last year in Montgomery. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office had one homicide investigation in 2020.
"It’s a national epidemic, but we are focused on implementing immediate and long-term solutions in Montgomery to reduce instances of violent crime," Reed said.
