On Saturday, January 16 at 10 am CST, the Freedom Rides Museum is honored to present, “MLK and the Freedom Rides: A 60th Anniversary Reflection,” featuring Freedom Rider Dr. Charles Person.
Dr. Person, then a student at Morehouse College, is one of only two remaining of the original thirteen Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) Freedom Riders that met with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the day before they were brutally attacked at a Birmingham bus station in May 1961. While Dr. King did not participate in the Freedom Rides, he “interjected words of encouragement and reassurances that their behavior represented ‘nonviolent direct action at its very best.’”
The program will focus on the important, yet complex support role that Dr. King played in the Freedom Rides and is part of a series of events to mark the 60th anniversary of the Freedom Rides throughout 2021. It is made possible through the generous support of the Alabama Historical Commission, the Friends of the Freedom Rides Museum and their donors.
