Mural Projects

The Public Art Commission has released a "call for proposals" for a mural to be placed on Maxwell Boulevard.  This is one of several mural calls that has gone out over the past year.

The first mural was related to the Voting Rights March of 1965 and placed at 121 Montgomery Street's exterior wall facing Lee Street.  This was a highly visible location for marchers who re-enacted the event in 2015 for the 50th anniversary of the original march.

For more information on the most recent mural call, please refer to the Maxwell Blvd Mural Project Call for Proposals; any further questions can be directed to

Public Art in Montgomery

The City of Montgomery has a rich and vibrant past of displaying public art, many pieces focused on the history of the Civil War, Civil Rights Movement, and our strong ties to the military with the two major Air Force Bases, Maxwell and Gunter, located adjacent to Downtown. For a brief history of just a sampling of public art, please see our Public Art in Montgomery page.

About the Public Art Commission

The Public Art Commission was established by City Council Resolution in August 2013 to coordinate activities dedicated to the placement of art in public places and to the promotion of public art to enhance the vibrancy of the city and quality of life of its citizens.

The commission’s primary goal is to have a systematic, but flexible, approach for

  • identifying suitable locations for the placement of public art
  • evaluating the aesthetic value of work proposed for placement in public places
  • making informed decisions about the future needs for care and maintenance before art objects are placed on properties owned by the city or in partnership with private property owners

It is not intended to establish complicated procedures requiring excessive review of minute details which will deter patrons from donating art to the city or which will stifle the spontaneity and creativity of artists.

Working with private developers, property owners, museums, universities and other organizations the Public Art Commission is able to provide assistance in locating artists for specific projects that, although on private property, are open to the public for viewing and enjoyment.

City of Montgomery Public Art does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, in any of its activities or selection of artists.

The Public Art Commission funds projects through solicitation of grants and other private funding.
