The combat challenge team is comprised of the top 9 members with the fastest times in completing the Montgomery Fire / Rescue Job Task Analysis. The try-outs for the combat challenge team were made available in memo form to all Montgomery Fire / Rescue personnel. We had a total of 56 personnel try-out for the team and the top 9 participates were selected.

The first competition was held in Albertville, Alabama on May 8th 2010. We had two different relay teams and one two - man tandem team qualify for the world competition with an overall time less than 1:50:00. The five man team broke a state record at this competition. The three fastest times of the five man team are added together for an overall time and this total time was 7:12:42.

The Challenge seeks to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate the profession's rigors to the public. Wearing "full turnout gear", pairs of competitors race as they simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting by performing a linked series of five tasks including climbing the 5-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized, 175 lb. "victim" as they race against themselves, their opponent and the clock.
