“Urban Design” is one of the Department of Development’s functional areas. We are a small department staffing-wise, but we work to magnify our impact by creating designs and recommending policies to enhance the urban environment.
Most typically, this work comes through in our Project Areas work. Also, a few ways we do this is by providing to other City departments expertise on the urban environment and designs, both architectural and graphic in nature. Department of Development staff may serve as a liaison among owners, designers, builders and the City. Staff often creates new designs and specific concepts that will enhance the urban environment. Also, we seek out new opportunities that might help nurture and support community vibrancy and quality of life in the great city of Montgomery.
To follow are a few select examples of department Urban Design activities.
The City of Montgomery has beautiful parks! Department of Development staff can often be called upon to help with design and layouts of parks. A related example of work to support parks came in 2015, where we combined graphic design and photography with writing on the history of these parks from Jeff and Karen Benton in the Old Cloverdale neighborhood. The result was this great brochure to show case these parks and educate readers on one of our historic districts. Click here to download the Cloverdale Park Brochure.
